MTP Kit: Avoid Unwanted Parenthood By Getting Rid Of Unwanted Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a matter of huge responsibility and the parents need to be well prepared for it. Pregnancy and subsequent child birth requires mental, physical, emotional and financial preparations for both the parents.

Raising a family demands very much from both of the parents but the mother bears more pain, troubles, and problems for motherhood. The mother sacrifices her health, job, and career, to bear a child, give birth to him/her and raise the child.

So for certain reasons if the woman is not prepared for childbirth, medical termination of pregnancy remains a scientific, medical and safe solution. There are many legal and medical complications that may also require termination of undesirable pregnancy.

A rape resulting into a pregnancy or any fatal untreatable genetic disease that may carry to the fetus also demands a safe and secured medical termination of that particular pregnancy.

What is medical Termination of pregnancy?

MTP Kit (Medical Termination of Pregnancy) is clinical abortion that is induced in a pregnant woman up to 63 days of fertilization by either medication or surgical procedure. It is the medical way of aborting unwanted pregnancy, and is also known as medicated abortion.

What is a MTP Kit?

MTP Kit is a combination of two drugs that is used and applied to induce medication abortion. These drugs are Misoprostol & Mifepristone. This is a set of two medicines especially used for medical abortion/termination of intrauterine pregnancy up to 63 days of fertilization.

A MTP Kit contains-

1 Mifepristone tablet- 200 mg

4 Misoprostol tablets- 200 mcg

For women, up to 49 – 63 days of gestation, abortion does not occur 4 hours after administration of Misoprostol, a second dose of Misoprostol 400 mcg ,2 tablets of 200 mcg may be administered vaginally or orally, depending upon preference and amount of bleeding, and as advised by her doctor.

How do these two drugs in MTP Kit Work?

Mifepristone is a synthetic steroid with an anti-progestational action it competes with progesterone at the progesterone receptors. This, pre-treatment with Mifepristone allows the dilatation and opening of uterus and vaginal cavity that results in termination of pregnancy. Mifepristone antagonizes the endometrial and myometrial effects of progesterone.

During pregnancy, it sensitizes the myometrium to the contract – inducing an action of prostaglandin during the first trimester of the cervix uteri. While clinical data have demonstrated that Mifepristone facilitates dilatation of the cervix, no data is available to indicate that this results in a lowering of the rate of early or late complications to the dilatation procedure.

Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 which is a potent inhibitor of gastric acid secretion in humans. It also causes the cervix to soften and the uterus to contract to initiate abortion.

Prostaglandin E1 causes myometrial contractions by interacting with specific receptors on myometrial cells. This interaction results in a change in calcium concentration, thereby initiating muscle contraction. By interacting with prostaglandin receptors, Misoprostol causes the cervix to soften and the uterus to contract, resulting in the expulsion of the uterine contents.

Contraindications for MTP Kit-

Known allergy to any of the ingredients of MTP kit, any chance of ectopic pregnancy, IUD still in place, chronic adrenal failure, uterine bleeding disorders, woman on any anti-coagulant therapy, etc.

Precautions while using MTP Kit-

The patient should visit her doctor for a follow-up visit approximately 14 days after the administration of Mifepristone. This visit is very important to confirm by clinical examination or ultrasonography scan that a complete termination of pregnancy has occurred.
